GODZILLA, THE ORIGINAL UNDUBBED JAPAN RELEASE. Reviewed by bonnie banks This movie has just been restored to it's original glory. Sort of taking some spot q's from "Beast from 1,000 Fathoms" and "It Came From Beneath the Sea" the Japanese went over the top with the miniature set building. They stuck some H bomb experiments underground with a big plestiocine lizard and shot it into the world. Comments on the war get delivered with such weight in this movie that only someone effected by the A bomb coulda written the script. One of the main scientists has scarring from the war. He's pretty adamant about using any kind of device to kill anything but maybe some fish. The audience was chuckling during the toyboat sequences, but suspending belief you get a great movie over all. It didn't matter that some of the scenes looked a little scaled and silly. The story carried the movie when the heavy lines were delivered, so screw you all. In fact, most of the miniatures looked unbelievably cool. Meticulous details that were obliterated between winks of the eyelashing. Did I miss Raymond Burr at all from the American version? Hell no. This movie kicks ass in every goddam way up including the Akira Ifkube soundtrack that sent my spine a tingling on a crosstown tail whipping rampage every time the horns kicked in. The ending was pretty poingiant also. I don't think I've ever seen so much emotion conveyed in an inantimate object since Quay Brothers animation. No fluff, hot stuff. |
