AMERICAN MOVIE Reviewed by bonnie banks A fast talking NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD fan has a scheme to make back all the money he's borrowed on NORTHWESTERN a grand movie on his experience in the Northwest. He's got a million setbacks including: his earlier picture COVEN never got finished, he has 3 kids by a lady who hates him, his girlfriend looks like his mom, he's an alcholic, his best friend is a burnout(great quotes from him throughout the movie after the fast paced spiels like "ya"), he owes money to everyone in the world. Deciding early on that he should finish his other movie COVEN and make back that money before taking on NORTHWESTERN he goes around trying to hype people into being with his dream, most of these people are pretty excited to be in his dream surprisingly. It's a documentary but it's almost like SPINAL TAP or something, more like a better version of WAITING FOR GUFFMAN as some of the overacting in the script reading is just incredible. When the burnout buddy starts talking lucidly for the first time about his pcp o.d., coming out of it and immediatly wanting to take acid in the hospital you will not be able to breathe from laughing so hard. I was giggling the whole movie. At one point the director confesses he's just always running away from himself and reflects on his life unassuredly. Another lucid moment he's sure COVEN should be pronounced CAUVEN so it wont be confused with OVEN which the movie will definitly not be about! He also is drunk at one point and just starts spewing some words not knowing where he's going when the documenter say's "What do you mean?". No answer...It's hard to believe half the stuff that happens in this movie but if you've spent time in the midwest you will see this is too forkin' real. The greatest gem in this movie is Uncle Bill who is sick of it all and super sarcastic. Eat your theatre seat as they work through 30+ shots of him trying to get a 2 lines right for the opening of the movie before he drops the clipboard and says screw it. Finally on the premiere of the show you are reminded of the ficticious ED WOOD movie when PLAN 9 comes out, but this is for real. A wonderful documentry to show the rest of the world what America is like. |
